Work Ability Coach

Work ability coaches help employees continue in working life, return to work after absence, and plan vocational rehabilitation.

What does a work ability coach do?

When you are concerned about your work ability or feel unsure about your career direction, you can get support through work ability coaching. The service is provided by a work ability coach working as part of occupational health's multidisciplinary team.

A work ability coach can help when:

  • your work ability is at risk of declining

  • you are considering returning to work after an absence

  • vocational rehabilitation is becoming relevant

  • career planning requires time to pause and reflect together

The coach takes a holistic view of work ability and helps find solutions suited to your situation — considering limitations, life circumstances, work history, skills, and interests to provide personalised support.

Work ability coaches are familiar with the service, rehabilitation, and benefits systems and relevant networks. In addition to occupational health, they also act as vocational rehabilitation providers for employment pension and accident insurance companies.

When should I contact a work ability coach?

It is worth seeking guidance when changes have occurred in your work ability or the path forward in your career feels unclear. Occupational health specialists can also identify situations where coaching would benefit you.

Topics you can discuss include:

  • continuing your career or changing career direction

  • returning to work after an absence

  • rehabilitation options

  • identifying your own competencies and development opportunities

  • work motivation

  • dealing with change and readiness for change

  • questions raised by approaching retirement

How do I access a work ability coach?

  • Through a referral from your occupational health nurse, doctor, or physiotherapist.

  • By contacting your insurance company — accident insurance or employment pension companies may cover the service through vocational rehabilitation.

  • By contacting your employer, who may fund the coaching service.

Coaches provide the service flexibly, both in person and remotely.
